Creighton clobbers K-State baseball 11-1

The Manhattan Mercury, Kan. — Staff Reports The Manhattan Mercury, Kan.

April 08--Apr. 8--Another rough first inning doomed Kansas State's baseball team Sunday.

Creighton pushed four runs across the plate in the opening frame. The Blue Jays cruised from there, routing the Wildcats 11-1 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.

It continued a theme from the season K-State would rather forget: first-inning futility. Opponents have outscored the Wildcats 32-11 in the first inning this year.

Creighton's offense notched 18 hits overall, chasing K-State starter Jaxon Passino (1-4) in the first inning of his first career start. Will Brennan and Kasey Ford came on in relief, with each tossing three innings.

After the two teams split the opening two games of the series Friday and Saturday, the Bluejays' stellar start at the plate went along with five shutout innings from its starting pitcher, Evan Johnson, to make for a drama-free Sunday for the hosts.

Dylan Phillips, an Omaha native, drove in the Wildcats' only run with a double in the top of the seventh. The loss dropped K-State to 13-20 this season, and it has lost four of its last five outings.

Creighton (16-7) pushed multiple runs across the plate in four of the contest's first five innings. Will Robertson was the marquee batsman for the Bluejays, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. But he wasn't the only Creighton hitter who found success Sunday, as five teammates also registered multi-hit games. Jake Holton had four hits while Parker Upton went 3-for-5. Upton's double in the fifth inning extended Creighton's lead to 10-0.

The Bluejays hit hit .500 (8-for-16) with two outs while and were even better with runners in scoring position, converting at a .538 (7-for-13) clip.

The Wildcats, by comparison, went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-12 with men on base.

K-State returns to action Wednesday, hosting Omaha at Tointon Family Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
