HASD plans celebration for high school graduates

Standard-Speaker, Hazleton, Pa. — Kent Jackson Standard-Speaker, Hazleton, Pa.

May 23-- May 23--A parade through Hazleton and West Hazleton will be part of a celebration for graduates of Hazleton Area High School on their commencement day, June 5.

Superintendent Brian Uplinger said he and municipal officials are finalizing the starting time and route for the parade.

To honor graduates virtually, the district paid Vego Pictures $14,000 to prepare a video for each senior.

Seniors will be able to send in pictures, and speakers will record their commencement talks as part of the video.

Details of how to submit photos are being worked out, as is the way in which students will receive their diplomas.

Seniors picked up caps and gowns Wednesday, but anyone who didn't have a chance can contact the high school to arrange a pickup.

Uplinger said a video ceremony wasn't the first choice for seniors or their parents, including him and his wife who have two children graduating from Hazleton Area this year.

"We wanted nothing less than to have our beautiful ceremony in front of the high school," he said.

School administrators, student council and class officers have planned the ceremony together.

"We recognize how hard each of our seniors has worked over the last 13 years," a post on the school's webpage said. "Members of our graduating class deserve a first-class ceremony to celebrate their high school accomplishments."
