R-Rated Veronica Mars Revival? Hulu Boss Promises 'Contemporary' Tone: 'She's Not a Little Girl Anymore'

Veronica Mars is an adult — and the forthcoming Hulu revival will reflect that.

Speaking at the Television Critics Assoc, winter press tour on Monday, the streamer’s VP of originals, Craig Erwich, promised the Veronica Mars limited series — bowing later this year — is “definitely an update,” adding, “[Veronica]’s not a little girl anymore. We’ll see her dealing with contemporary issues in a contemporary world.

“I’ve read the scripts, they’re excellent,” the exec added of the quasi-fourth season. “It is very true to the character. It is very true to the true to the world. It is very true to the tone of the show and what made people fall in love with the show.”

Erwich says the idea for the revival originated with series “steward” Rob Thomas, who “came into our office and explained, very passionately, why he wanted to do this and how he wanted to do it. There was a real creative reason to do it.”

Production is currently underway in Los Angeles on the continuation, which, narratively, picks up five years after the events of the 2014 fan-funded movie and features returning stars Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni, Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, Ryan Hansen and Max Greenfield (among others). The revival will take the franchise back to its “hardcore So-Cal noir” roots, Thomas previously shared. “[There will be] one big case [with] eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show.”
