Major League Baseball trade season began Monday with the Nationals acquiring Royals closer Kelvin Herrera.
Washington (38-31) is currently only three games behind the young Braves in the National League East, but entered Monday on a three-game losing streak.
Herrera, 28, provides the Nationals with another elite arm out of the bullpen. It is unclear what his role will be, but the teams' current closer, Sean Doolittle, has been efficient this season.
Herrera is 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA and 14 saves for the struggling Royals this season. It's possible he will move to the eighth inning in Washington, though.
The MLB trade deadline is July 31, so there should be plenty more trades to come this summer.
